Hair ReturnViews: 351

My hair is finally slowly starting to return. My last chemo treatment was in February and I think I expected I would have a complete head of hair within a week! First, I had about 1/8” white hair all over my head. Then I started getting little patches of black hair. Now, three months later, my hair is still less than 1/2” long, but it’s getting thicker. And it feels so good!

I am new to this site as well. Can you share more. IS your hair the same color I am told it might come in a different color. MY luck it will come in “pink”.

Hi Shelly:

The thing I hear over and over is “everyone’s different”. It’s not what I wanted to hear, but have now accepted it. :) I’ve heard that if you had straight hair, it comes back in curly and if you had curly hair it comes back in straight. And yes, the color can be any color. My hair had been salt and pepper and I told all my friends I wished it would come back a beautiful autumn. No such luck! I think mine will be salt and pepper again. It’s very straight right now, but one nurse told me she thinks it may end up curly. Wow, I’ll be a curly haired little old lady. :) It was good to hear from another survivor….take care. Oh, and pink’s not a bad color. Ask Cindy Lauper.

Ive looked at relooked at the pictures of the women who have shaved their heads before chemo I know it is the best choice. I know it will help my children adjust, thery will accpet the bladness and the change easier, jus tlike I will. But OMH, I just dont think I have the strength.

If you have long hair, experiment and cut it into a short, sassy style. Since it’s going to fall out anyway, you can at least take this time to experiment with hair styles. Also, you can go bald, wear scarves, caps, hats, whatever. I wanted to go bald, but I teach first graders and it was harder for them to adjust to than I expected. So I wore caps the whole time. I’m not a scarf person. My family adjusted very well as will your’s, I’m sure. Even my 5 year old grandson didn’t have a problem with my bald head. You will find courage and strength as you go through this journey——-I know I did. Now that most of the treatment is over, I’m feeling much more like my old self. It will happen! Have a great day.

Just to let you know, I have had to go through the hair loss twice in the last 18 months. The first time it came in very white, thick, and wavy. There was black coming in in the back. My hair before was very straight, fine, and light brown with some gray (which I of course colored!). My eyelashes returned luxuriously thick and long… a dream come true! This time my hair has come in fine, straight and a bit more white, a few weird curls at the nape of my neck. My eyelashes are thin and scraggly on on left eye and even, log, and thin on my left eye. You never know. I just hope I get to keep it this time.
